  • Temporary Assistance for the needy families (TANF): This grant is design for the low income single families. Families can raise their financial level through work opportunities and short term financial assistance. You can avail the two types of TANF grants. You can go for child grants for your children education. These grants are less as compared to the family grants for single mothers. The grant is limited to $8 per day for one child. The other type of TANF grant is known as the family grant which is necessary for fulfillment of the basic family basic needs like food, shelter, clothes and other important needs for up to 60 months period.
  • These grants are commonly known as the welfare grants. These grants differ according to the area where you live. The TANF grant policies in the area with larger African American population are different form rest of the areas. The women with the children under the age of 19 are eligible for assistance under TANF. The criteria for receiving the grant are very clear and transparent. You have to work for certain number of hours each month.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): Formally it is known as food stamp program. The aim of this program is to provide affordable and healthy meals to the families with low or no income. SNAP is the only income assistance for many poorest Americans. This program had provided assistance to nearly 40 million low income Americans. The largest number of recipients is the children below the age of 18 years. The assistance can be availed in form of debit card (EBT). You can use this card to purchase the grocery items. You have to apply for this program at the local SNAP office.
  • Women, infants and children program: This is the free program started by the government that provides the free feeding for the pregnant women, new mothers and children under the age of five years. This is a short term program where the recipients receive the assistance for a period of six months to a year.
