Chapter 276: Everyone is Trying To Survive
Chapter 276: Everyone is Trying To Survive
Falcoln stared at them coldly. Both of his hands tightly gripped the shaft of Azul’s spear, trying to pull it out of his chest. But no matter how hard he struggled, Azul didn’t move even a little.
The fish beastman pushed the spear deeper into Falcoln’s chest, making the eagle let out an ear-piercing scream.
"Like I said, stay there," Azul repeated once again. This time, his voice truly sounded cold, without even the slightest trace of warmth in it.
Roxanna stared at Falcoln with dark eyes as well. Honestly, she didn’t even want to look at him for too long because for some reason, just seeing him made her stomach twist in disgust.
"Stop all of this mess," Roxanna said with a sharp gaze. She wasn’t someone who was naturally good at glaring at people or acting cruel, but right now, she tried her best.
"You’re not in a position to negotiate," she continued. "So if you still want to stay alive, stop all of this."
Instead of looking scared, Falcoln suddenly laughed at her.
"Or what?" he mocked. "Do you really think your tribe can kill all of us? Once your poison runs out, it’ll be impossible for you to—"
"It’s not impossible," Roxanna cut him off immediately and there wasn’t even a trace of fear in her voice.
"We can still destroy all of you," she said firmly. "With or without the poison."
Falcoln went silent for a moment before sneering.
"You’re too confident, little fox." He suddenly spat toward her direction. "The moment we find the children and elders of your tribe, you’ll beg me yourself and hand Cyrus over to me."
"I won’t," Roxanna answered without hesitation. "Even if you burn me alive, I will never hand Cyrus over to you."
Falcoln scoffed loudly. "You’re talking too confidently! Let’s see if you can still say that when it really happens!"
"It won’t happen." The softness that usually filled Roxanna’s eyes had completely disappeared. "They’re in safe hands."
Falcoln narrowed his eyes. "One of your husbands is protecting them? I don’t think—"
"My husbands are strong," Roxanna interrupted again. "They’re much stronger than they look, probably even stronger than you think."
Her voice became steadier with every word. "I trust all of them. I know they can protect this tribe well enough."
Falcoln clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"That’s why, Falcoln..." Roxanna deliberately said his name slowly, as if reminding him he meant nothing to her. "You came to the wrong place."
"In this tribe, we will never trade one of our people for freedom." She paused for a moment before continuing firmly, "We would rather die together than sacrifice even one of our own."
[But what if his people really manage to catch Skiv and the others?!]
Roxanna screamed inside her own head. On the outside, her expression still looked calm and steady, but inside, her heart was already drowning in fear and worry.
[What if they kill Calen?]
Her thoughts immediately became more chaotic. [No, no, no. Calen is strong enough to protect them. I know he is. But what if—]
[STOP THINKING ABOUT ALL THE WORST POSSIBILITIES!]
Roxanna clenched her fists tightly.
Like she said before, she would never sacrifice Cyrus for the sake of the tribe’s safety. She would never hand him over just to save themselves, but that didn’t mean she wanted to watch her entire tribe get destroyed either.
[But at least... at least... if the Sky Tribe truly manages to destroy and kill us, then we will die together.]
It sounded horrible, maybe even cruel.
But somehow, the idea of facing death together with everyone else felt less frightening than being left alone behind.
"I see..." Falcoln suddenly spoke again, his voice sounding strangely calm. "If that’s what you wish for, then I’ll make it happen for you."
The next second, he let out a loud, sharp whistle. It sounded almost like a bird calling out to its own flock.
"What are you doing?" Azul immediately pushed the spear deeper into Falcoln’s chest. Blood poured down heavily from the wound, but even then, Falcoln kept whistling as if he couldn’t feel the pain at all.
"Stop that!"
For some reason, both Azul and Roxanna knew that the whistle would definitely bring disaster.
In less than two minutes, the entire ground of the settlement shook violently.
RUMBLE!
Several beastmen nearly lost their balance as the earth trembled under their feet. Falcoln finally stopped whistling. Slowly, he lifted his head and smiled at Roxanna.
"You protected your houses with some kind of fire-resistant barrier," he said calmly. "But... did your shield also protect the ground underneath it? I guess not."
Roxanna’s eyes widened.
Before she could even turn around, a series of loud explosions suddenly erupted behind her.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The fire exploded upward one after another, tearing through the ground below the settlement. At the same time, the fire-resistant barrier around the tribe flickered violently before disappearing completely because the white crystals that powered the barrier were blown away by the explosions, scattering across the ground and into the air.
As the ground shook harder and harder, the broken debris behind Falcoln began crashing down around him. Using that chance, he forcibly pulled himself away from Azul’s spear.
Blood splattered everywhere as he stumbled back, but instead of looking weak, he slowly smiled.
"This is the price you pay for refusing to listen to me," Falcoln said calmly. "Even in the end, the land-version Sky Tribe still follows my orders."
The source of the violent shaking finally revealed itself moments later. One by one, mole beastkins climbed out from beneath the ground.
[So they were the ones causing the explosions...]
Roxanna stared at them in shock. Judging from their appearance, they were clearly from the land-version Sky Tribe, but strangely enough, none of them looked happy.
Most of them looked uneasy. Guilty, even. It was obvious they didn’t truly want to destroy the Vixeria Tribe either, but unfortunately, when people were pushed to the edge of survival, they would do almost anything to stay alive, even if it meant hurting others.
Roxanna understood that part because after all, everyone was simply trying their best to survive in this cruel world. But understanding them didn’t stop the anger burning inside her chest.
"Where is Zeir?" Roxanna suddenly whispered as she realized he was still near the land-version Sky Tribe earlier.
Her expression immediately changed and fear quickly filled her eyes.
She took a step forward and shouted at the mole beastkins, "Where is my husband?!"
Instead of answering her immediately, the mole beastkins only looked at her with guilty expressions.
"We’re... sorry," one of them said quietly.
"No, don’t just say that!"
Roxanna stepped forward so quickly that several of them instinctively backed away. Her eyes were already turning red from panic and anger.
"My husband went to your tribe to help all of you!" she shouted. "So tell me—WHERE IS HE?!"
But even while asking about Zeir, Roxanna couldn’t fully focus on him, not when her entire tribe was still in danger.
The explosions kept coming one after another, and Falcoln had already managed to slip away when Azul lost focus for even a brief moment.
Amid all the chaos, Roxanna accidentally locked eyes with Cyrus.
The moment she saw his expression, her heart dropped. He looked guilty, probably because he understood that all of this misfortune was happening because of him.
Then, he slowly opened his mouth and mouthed a single word. "Sorry."
Roxanna froze for a second, then fear immediately crashed into her chest because she knew exactly what he was trying to do.
"STAY THERE!" she screamed as loudly as she could.
Without thinking twice, Roxanna ran toward him as fast as she could. She ignored the painful burning in her chest from breathing too much smoke and she ignored how weak her legs felt from exhaustion.
Right now, none of that mattered after all.
"CYRUS!"
Her voice almost broke when she saw him stepping backward little by little, as if preparing to transform into a bird and leave.
"I WON’T FORGIVE YOU IF YOU LEAVE ME!" she shouted desperately.
The moment Roxanna jumped toward him, he suddenly transformed into a bird and flew upward, so the only thing she managed to catch was his empty clothes.
Roxanna froze and for a second, all she could do was stare blankly at the clothes she was holding.
Then, she lifted her head, and fear gnawed at her heart. Her breaths became shaky and uneven, but the moment she realized he was flying toward the eagle beastmen, panic completely took over her.
"CYRUS!" Her voice cracked as she screamed his name. Tears quickly filled her eyes. "I would rather die than watch you go back to them!!"
She quickly tried to grab her magical bow, but it seemed she had accidentally dropped it somewhere along the way. Because of that, she decided to take the ordinary bow that Cyrus had used earlier.
In desperation, she fired at the eagle beastmen flying near him.
"We built our home together!" she shouted once more, her voice full of fear and desperation. "So don’t you dare leave me behind all alone!"
