Chapter 105 Unexpected Departure
Chapter 105 Unexpected Departure
The others had already left. Cyril looked at Kane and bowed in thanks.
"Sir, I will transfer the remaining payment to the Dark Brotherhood's account."
Kane stared at the newly added skill point on the panel, nodded slightly, and without hesitation added it to the gray skill [Life Principle]. The skill instantly lit up and turned white.
To advance to the second tier, in addition to raising your level to 20 and accumulating enough experience to break through to level 21, you must also master all the prerequisite knowledge.
The core difference between the second and first tiers is that the caster needs to establish a specialization (except for special beings like ghouls).
Having chosen the School of Change, Kane naturally needed to master the prerequisite knowledge of that school one by one.
The prerequisite knowledge for the School of Change consists of five items: [Principles of Life], [Basic Transformation], [Matter Research], [Biological Anatomy], and [Principles of Change].
Now that he's mastered another skill, Kane nodded to himself.
Including what he unlocked before, he has now mastered two items and plans to leave this place first to collect the remaining three.
But just as he was about to set off, Cyril, who was already seated in the carriage, looked at him hesitantly, then spoke after a moment:
"Sir, thank you for your help. Please leave this place as soon as possible."
"leave?"
Kane frowned slightly. Sophia, standing beside him, suddenly changed her expression. Looking around, she realized that everyone else had vanished, and Cyril's carriage had already driven away.
Kane looked at Sofia, his tone indifferent:
"It seems that helping him win the underground duel has backfired. However, the Dark Brotherhood's deterrent power is far too weak."
Sophia shook her head, looking troubled: "Many Brotherhood members have defected to the Demon Cult, leading to numerous attacks and suppressions against us by the six nations. However, I will certainly give you an explanation for this matter; we must leave as soon as possible."
Kane looked at her but didn't reply. He knew Sophia wasn't telling the truth—the Dark Brotherhood was clearly colluding with the demon cult, and had even sent people there willingly; otherwise, Laun wouldn't have specifically suggested he come here.
"Let's go and see what other trouble we might encounter."
Kane took the lead, and the two walked out along the path they had come from.
Just as they were about to leave the port area, a sound of armor clashing suddenly came. The two hid behind the warehouse and observed from the shadows.
A squad of half-elf soldiers carrying torches was hurrying over. They were dressed in light armor with exquisite patterns, with bows and arrows slung over their backs and rapiers in their hands. Their military configuration was completely different from that of the Nord region.
Donovan, the other businessman from the previous underground duel, stood at the front of the group and shouted the order:
"The Dark Brotherhood has colluded with the drow descendants! Capture that drow descendant alive and present him to the master; as for that woman, kill her on the spot!"
Kane's lips twitched slightly upon hearing this familiar accusation.
Sophia's expression grew increasingly grim, and she explained in a low voice, "This is the private army of a noble family that he's affiliated with, but..."
A flash of inspiration struck Kane, and he instantly understood.
In the Susas Elven Court, status is determined by bloodline. The more noble an elf's bloodline, the higher they can be ranked among the high-ranking nobles. In reality, the order of the entire kingdom is maintained by the private armies of the various nobles.
Sophia looked at Kane, her tone urgent: "Sir, the other party probably not only wants revenge against us, but also has their eyes on your pure-blooded drow bloodline. If possible, please leave on your own."
As she spoke, she drew a dagger from her waist and assumed a defensive stance.
Kane looked at the responsible mission intermediary, pondered for a moment, and then said, "Give me your next mission."
"A commission?" Sophia was taken aback, then gritted her teeth, as if calculating her savings, and said:
"50 gold coins, please take me away. Once we return to the Brotherhood, I will contact the nobles we are affiliated with and seek their support."
"That's quite a sacrifice." Kane raised an eyebrow, his gaze falling on the panel that had suddenly appeared before him—
Side Quest: Escape from the Pursuit
[Synopsis: Sophia, a member of the Dark Brotherhood, is openly hunted by a noble's private army. You must escort her to safety.]
[Reward: 1 skill points]
"One skill point is a good deal."
Kane secretly thought to himself, even considering deliberately making things difficult for the Dark Brotherhood quest giver.
Sophia, who was somewhat puzzled by his gaze, quickly realized what he meant and added:
"Don't worry, the Brotherhood will cover the cost of those 50 gold coins."
So it was public funds being used; no wonder they were so generous. Kane withdrew his gaze.
Just then, the hurried footsteps grew closer, clearly indicating that the soldiers were approaching.
"You wait here, it'll be resolved soon."
Kane stepped forward. Sophia suddenly grabbed him: "If possible, try not to kill anyone; just incapacitate them."
"So much trouble," Kane muttered to himself, but nodded nonetheless—he knew Sophia was afraid of making things too big and attracting more trouble.
The footsteps were approaching. Kane turned around, walked straight out of the shadows of the warehouse, and stood in front of the dozen or so soldiers holding torches.
Upon seeing Kane, Donovan's expression first changed drastically, then he was overjoyed, shouting, "Grab him!"
Kane's gaze swept over the crowd. Many soldiers were stunned when they saw the pure-blooded Drow features on his face, and then hesitated, not making a move for a long time.
The half-elf soldier leading the group frowned, raised his hand to make a stop gesture, and the soldiers immediately halted.
"Grab him! Are you going to disobey the adults' orders?" Donovan shouted anxiously.
The lead soldier suddenly spoke, her tone cold: "Our lord never said anything about capturing pure-blooded drows." She looked at Donovan, her eyes filled with contempt, "You're just a merchant, what right do you have to order us around?"
Kane frowned, looking at the infighting troops before him, and found it absurd—there had never been such a chaotic army in Nord, what was going on?
During the argument, the leading soldier suddenly removed his helmet, revealing a head of long hair cascading over his shoulders—he was a female half-elf, whose ear tips were more pointed than those of ordinary half-elves, clearly indicating a stronger elven bloodline.
She stepped forward, gave a slight bow to Kane, and said respectfully, "Your Excellency Drow, would you do us the honor of accompanying us to see the Lord?"
"You want to take me back?" Kane's gaze sharpened, his hands already prepared for a response.
The female captain shook her head in denial:
"I will request the lord to deal with this impudent merchant fairly. You are a pure-blooded drow, and in the Sussas Elven Court, pure-bloodedness has always been of paramount importance and must be taken seriously."
Kane glanced at Donovan, who looked shocked and angry, and judged that the female captain's words did not seem to be false.
It's true that you shouldn't hit someone who's smiling at you. If the other person has expressed goodwill, it would be beneath you to resort to violence.
As he pondered how to end this, Sophia stepped forward and said to the female captain, "This gentleman is currently under the protection of our Dark Brotherhood."
The female captain's expression turned strange, her tone laced with mockery: "Is this what the Dark Brotherhood's protection is—allowing you to participate in underground duels?"
Sofia looked embarrassed and was speechless for a moment.
Kane pondered for a moment, then spoke:
"It is getting late today, so I will not accompany you to see the lord. If there are any further invitations, please convey them to me through the Dark Brotherhood, and I will decide the time and place."
He looked at Sofia, gesturing for her to follow:
"Let's go."
I didn't expect to get these two skill points so easily. It's best not to have to do anything - after all, the higher the level, the more experience you get for defeating ordinary soldiers, and it's pointless.
Moreover, if one wants to establish a long-term foothold here, it's best to avoid conflict with official forces as much as possible.
After saying that, he strode straight past the ranks of soldiers.
As Kane passed Donovan, he glanced at him—the latter clearly knew he had gotten into trouble for lying and hung his head, not daring to utter a sound.
Sofia quickly followed Kane's footsteps, and the two slowly left the port area along the same route they had come from...
